Department of Physics and Astronomy
University of Mississippi

Message from the ChairLuca Bombelli, Associate Professor and Chair of Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at The University of Mississippi is dedicated to providing a nurturing and challenging environment for our students. We take pride in our instruction of young future scientists. In the department, students work and interact with an enthusiastic and dedicated group of faculty and scholars. We offer undergraduate programs of study leading to both Bachelor or Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees.  B.A. majors anticipate careers in the health science, teaching, or medicine, whereas B.S. majors are preparing for future graduate work and careers in physics research. We have an excellent graduate research program leading to Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Atmospheric Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Physical Acoustics, Gravitational Physics, and Particle Physics. Our internationally recognized faculty carry out research at cutting-edge facilities on campus and around the world.

The department can boast a rich history in physics and astronomy reaching as far back as the beginnings of the University.  We feature a special collection of antique physics demonstration equipment which is on display in Lewis Hall and the Mary Buie Museum. The Department hosts Astronomy nights at the Kennon Observatory.  Please take the time to investigate our programs and even arrange a visit to our department.
