Each year College of Liberal Arts departments present Graduate Student Achievement Awards at Honors Day. Kevin Yi-Wei Lin, a physics graduate student in Acoustics, is one of the six recipients of the 2020 College of Liberal Arts Graduate Student Achievement Award. These six represent scholars across the discipline areas housed in the College.

Kevin Yi-Wei Lin received his Ph.D. in 2020. His Dissertation was “Nondestructive Evaluation Of Solid Cargo Inside Cylindrical Containers By Using Linear And Nonlinear Acoustic Resonance Spectroscopy“.

University of Mississippi physicists with the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) publish results in Nature.

“Demonstration of cooling by the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment” was published in Nature on February 5, 2020. For the first time scientists have observed muon ionization cooling – a major step in being able to create the world’s most powerful particle accelerator. Until now, the question has been whether it’s possible to “squeeze” a beam of muons sufficiently to achieve the luminosity needed to study new physics. The new research, published in Nature on Feb. 5, shows that it is possible. The results of the experiment, carried out using the MICE muon beamline at the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, clearly show that ionization cooling works and can be used to channel muons into a tiny volume, thus providing a beam for a new type of particle accelerator.

After a few years hiatus, the GCGM returns! The 9th Gulf Coast Gravity Meeting will be held at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS, on March 13 and 14, 2020. In keeping with its tradition, this will be an open, relaxed, and informal conference. We are inviting researchers and students interested in all areas of gravitational physics: classical and quantum gravity, general relativistic astrophysics and cosmology, quantum cosmology, gravitational waves, and experimental gravity. Because this is a regional meeting, many attendees will be from the southeastern United States, but all are welcome. Unfortunately the meeting had to be postponed until after the coronavirus pandemic ends.

Dr. Anuradha Gupta has just joined us as an Assistant professor. She received her Ph.D. from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mubai (India). She was postdoctoral researcher with the Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos at Pennsylvania State University, where she was studying gravitational waves from compact binary mergers.

Henry E. Bass Basic Acoustics Summer School

The BASS 2020 EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROGRAM.

The 2020 Basic Acoustics Summer School Program (BASS) will celebrate its 11^th year this summer. The program was first created in memory of Dr. Henry E. Bass, who was a physicist and acoustics researcher that led efforts to create the National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) in the 1980s and served as the Center’s director from 1992 until his passing in 2008. He was a talented researcher and a gifted teacher. Up-to-date, 20 undergraduate students from various backgrounds and universities have successfully completed the program.
