Dr. Joel Mobley, Professor of Physics and Astronomy has been elected a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.

Dr. Joel Mobley, Professor of Physics and Astronomy has been elected a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. Professor Mobley’s citation is for “contributions to the ultrasonic characterization of dispersive systems.” Announcement of the election and presentation of the Fellowship certificate will be made during the at the 179th meeting in Chicago, Illinois on 13 May 2020. In addition to his position in the Physics Department, he is a Senior Scientist of the National Center for Physical Acoustics at Ole Miss.

Dr. James M. Sabatier has won the ASA 2019 Silver Medal in Physical Acoustics

Dr. James M. Sabatier has won the Acoustical Society of America 2019 Silver Medal in Physical Acoustics.

The Silver Medal is presented to individuals, without age limitation, for contributions to the advancement of science, engineering, or human welfare through the application of acoustic principles, or through research accomplishment in acoustics.

Sumeet Kulkarni in Scientific American

Graduate student Sumeet Kulkarni has published a piece entitled “Mind the Mass Gap” in Scientific American’s Observations blog.

The 2019 Physics Nobel Prize

The 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics are awarded “for contributions to our understanding of the evolution of the universe and Earth’s place in the cosmos”, with one half to James Peebles “for theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology” and the other half jointly to Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz “for the discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star.”

New Faculty Member: Dr. Gavin Davies

Dr. Gavin Davies has just joined us as an Assistant professor. Dr. Davies received a Ph.D. in Physics from Lancaster University (UK). He did postdoctoral research at Indiana University, where he worked with the NOvA experiment. Dr. Davies is an experimental elementary particle physicist. His research is primarily focused on Neutrino Physics. He was also the Chair of Fermilab Users Executive Committee.
